essay of pollution
Rainsford, a former war veteran, cannot accept murder; therefore, there is a moral distinction. However, Rainsford accepts killing for entertainment, not human beings, but animals. He justifies the murder of animals because he does not think that they can feel or think. Indeed, these two hunters are the same. The only difference between them is that Zaroff has gone further. He is older, supposedly rich, had more experience than Rainsford. The question is, will Rainsford become like Zaroff, or not. In the story, Rainsford is a dynamic character. He changed his views within the story. At the beginning, he thinks that animals do not feel any fear. After he was hunted and felt fear, he said he knew how animals feel. When he meets Zaroff at the end, he told Zaroff that he was a beast at bay, because he had become an animal himself.
That means he can change his views once more. However, Zaroff was also a simple hunter, when he was younger. Rainsford, a fanatic hunter, meets another hunting zealot and becomes a game. As Blossom N. Rainsford violently advocates the idea that hunting human beings is a murder, but kills Zaroff, though he does not need to do it. In Sanger Rainsford—the rugged American individualist—democratic optimism and Emersonian self-reliance are brought to the fore to vanquish the embodiment of an outdated, intractable, and decadent colonial system that has outlived its time yet still clings stubbornly to the remnants of old grandeur and martial glory, however, tattered or decrepit Thompson.
For Thompson Zaroff represents the decadent colonial system, that outlived its time, it is hard to agree with such an assumption. First of all, the author does not give any hints for such ideas, since the plot is quite simple. Second, Rainsford represents the same colonial system. It is surprising that after the introduction, Zaroff has heard of Rainsford from the books he has read about him hunting leopards in Tibet, China. They then have dinner together. His adventure surprises Rainsford, who, even after persuasion, refused to join. What happens when Rainsford refuses to hunt with Zaroff? Zaroff says that he now captures sailors whose ships are wrecked; he then sends them to the forest with food, dressed in full hunting regalia and a knife.
The sailors now become his target and turn to hunt and kill them. Being a determined General, he sets his limits to three days. If by the third day neither Ivan, his hunting dogs nor himself have killed the prey, he lets them go. However, his hunting skills had never allowed an escape to occur. Rainsford turns down the offer to join the hunting of human beings. Zaroff gives him two options. To become either the next prey to be hunted or Ivan whips him to death. Rainsford chooses the former. It is the use of stamina and strength with the show of intelligence. Zaroff makes sure that Rainsford gets the standard treatment of a captive, including giving him food supplies and instructions. The challenge is risky but very intriguing.
Rainsford starts by hiding his hunting tactics. He climbs a tree where he is very visible. This serves to convince Zaroff that Rainsford is easy prey and immediately turns it into the game. The next flow of events proves that Rainsford is a guru in hunting. He sets a trap made of a massive log joined to a tripwire. The first casualty is Zaroff. His shoulder is injured, sending him back to the mansion to sleep. The trap he uses here, he calls it, a Malay man catcher. Day one is done, and Rainsford knows that he has two to go. The author describes the house as almost gothic in its appearance.
This properly creates suspense because the description of the house places a sense of fear and loathing not just into Rainsford but the audience as well. The author of the story uses suspense to help further along the theme by making the audience feel like we are in the story too and that they are going to get caught by Zaroff also. Throughout the entire story, the author does a good job of making the tone of the story very mysterious, suspenseful and eerie. The author, Richard Connell does a good job of creating this tone through his descriptions of the characters, the island itself, and the way the sailors react when they are near the island. The sailors are described as being masculine and strong, but when they get near the island, they act like cowards.
That little detail and description placed by Richard Connell helps set the tone for the rest of the story. That detail described by Connell is important because it shows the audience that something is not right with that island. Also, the way the island is described by Connell helps create a mysterious, suspenseful and eerie tone. Connell describes the mansion as being dark and not very welcoming to the outside. He also, describes the mansion as looking like a castle. This helps create a mysterious tone around the whole character of General Zaroff before Rainsford and the audience even meet him.
Rainsford also notices that General Zaroff looks like an aristocrat in his opinion. Connell uses the elements of foreshadowing, suspense and tone to help highlight the theme of the depravity of man in the story. Richard Connell does a good job of not over using one element in the story but using a variety of different elements that complement each other to help make the story fun and enjoyable for the readers of his story, but at the same time, helps prove the theme in the story. Without any one element, the story would not be as impactful or as good as it is with them in the story. On the other hand, the story would also not be as good or impactful if he decided to use more literary elements.
The story would feel overwhelming and give too much information for the readers to comprehend in such a short amount of time. com, Mar 20,
